Avery's New World Porter

I am a big fan of just about everything Avery Brewing does, and I'm a big fan of porters in general. So when a beautiful Saturday led to a meandering road trip to Martin City (and therefore Lukas Liquors), do you really think I'd pass up a six-pack of Avery's New World Porter?

I got to drink one Monday, and...wow. This beer is HOPPY, much more so than one would expect from the style. There are the hints of chocolate and sweetness you typically get in a porter, but with the dry, almost floral finish you would get from an IPA.
In fact, that is how I would describe this beer: a delightful porter/IPA hybrid. I really haven't tasted a beer quite like this.

Damn, that sounds interesting - I'll have to pick some of that up! I plan on trying their Denver Pale tonight!

Whoops, got my trains of thought on the wrong tracks...

I will still have to try that - the only Avery I've had so far is their Hog Heaven.

Yeah, I've found it's hard to go wrong with Great Divide or Avery. Both are companies you can really get behind and feel good about supporting.

Avery has a wider variety of stuff available here in KC, but both breweries have a similar presence--their standards are sold in 6-packs and their specialties are in bombers.

I tried the New World Porter last night and loved it! As a big fan of IPAs & porters I was very curious to see how I'd like it. I think you're exactly right - "porter/IPA hybrid." What an interestingly delightful beer. Thanks for recommending!

Glad you enjoyed it! Speaking of IPAs and porters, if you happen to make it down to the Flying Saucer, they are currently pouring Bell's Hopslam (Imperial IPA) and Rogue's Imperial Porter. Both of them have absolutely huge flavor yet are nicely balanced. You may want to have a cab lined up if you have a pint of each, though! I think they're both over 10% ABV.
